Drivers on the important Dublin to Rosslare route will enjoy a journey time saving of up to 30 minutes with the opening today (Monday, September 27th 2004) of the Ashford-Rathnew Bypass.
Completion of the new Bypass means drivers will be able to use 50 km of dual carriageway standard roadway from Donnybrook in Dublin south city to beyond Rathnew in Co Wicklow.
Built by Wicklow County Council and funded by the National Roads Authority at a cost of approximately €183m, the new 13.6 km dual-carriageway was officially opened today by the Minister for Transport, Mr Seamus Brennan TD.
As well as providing a more efficient, safer roadway, the Bypass will also give a new lease of life to Ashford and Rathnew by taking an estimated 20,000 vehicles a day out of the two villages.
The project - which also involved construction of 16.7 km of access roads and ramps, five interchanges and 12 bridges - was completed ahead of time. The project was funded by the Irish Government under the National Development Plan, 2000 - 2006 and part funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).
The opening of the Ashford-Rathnew Bypass follows the official opening last May of the Kilmacanogue to Glen-of-the-Downs dual carriageway scheme.
The Minister for Transport, Mr Seamus Brennan TD said: "Great credit is due to the National Roads Authority and Wicklow County Council for delivering this major project ahead of schedule while at the same time taking great care to investigate and protect the immediate environment and important archaeological remains."
Mr Peter Malone, Chairman of the National Roads Authority, said: "The completion of this important scheme of the N11 will consign two of the worst bottlenecks on the east coast to the history books and will also yield a substantial safety dividend with the elimination of head-on collisions as a result of a overtaking manoeuvers on the existing single carriageway."
