An English man has been jailed for two months at Wicklow District Court for drunk driving. The offence came to light after an altercation with another driver in which he produced a knife.
Patrick Traynor (35) of Old Forge, 26 Adelaide Street, Stonehouse, Plymouth, pleaded guilty to possession of a knife at McDaniel's, Ballinacarrig, Brittas Bay, and with drunk driving at Ballinacarrig, Brittas Bay, on April 10 last.
Garda Conor Gilmartin told the court that analysis of the defendant's breath produced a reading of 71 micrograms of alcohol per 100 millilitres of breath.
He said that the defendant was driving in the Brittas Bay area when he overtook a number of cars in a dangerous manner.
An irate motorist approached him in the car park at McDaniel's and during the course of the discussion he showed the other motorist a knife he had in the car. The Garda added that the knife was not shown in a threatening manner.
Garda Gilmartin said that Traynor had previous convictions in England and was currently disqualified from driving for drunk driving there.
Defence solicitor, Pat O'Toole, said his client was in Ireland on holiday and probably had alcohol in his system at the time.
He explained that when the other motorist came to him he didn't know who he was or what he was doing so he put his hand on the knife. It was in the car for peeling oranges, he said.
Judge Donnchadh O'Buachalla imposed a two month jail term dating from April 10, disqualified him from driving for two years and ordered that the conviction be endorsed on his licence. The charge of possessing the knife was taken into account.
