THE CHANCES of the proposed Brittas Bay Water Group Scheme finally making some progress was dealt a serious blow by Wicklow County Council during a Brittas Bay Community Development Group meeting held in Jack Whites Inn on Monday night.
The Development Group first applied for the private group water scheme some two and a half years ago but has now been informed by the Council that of the 112 applicants, Brittas Bay is not one of the 83 schemes that have been approved.
While not told which applicants were successful, the Development Group were advised that another option would be to wait until the needs of Wicklow Town, Ash-ford and Rathnew were accommodated and Brittas could be factored into that scheme.
However, the Council representatives could not say when that particular scheme might be finished or when Brittas could be included.
Another suggestion to overcome the difficulty of not having reached the necessary threshold that the 83 applicants would allow was to increase the number of applicants, raising the threshold to the amount necessary to qualify.
Former Councillor Basil S.C. Phelan was just one of the many upset residents at the meeting, having campaigned for water for Brittas 34 years ago - only to be told by Wicklow Town Council that it would come in 20 years time. Yet it is well over 20 years later and he is still waiting. Paul Leahy, PRO for Brittas Bay community Group, felt that Brittas was caught in the Rural/Urban divide.
"We have been campaigning for local needs for years and have been met with a kick in the teeth. The time has come to move the goal posts as the council have been doing."
Mr. Paul Leahy then put himself forward as a candidate for the forthcoming local government elections in an effort to voice the needs of the rural part of this constituency.
